The amount of cold needed by a plant to resume normal spring growth following the winter period—commonly referred to as its "chilling requirement"—has been carefully studied. Plant species as well as horticultural varieties vary widely in their winter cold requirement. This four-page publication helps fruit producers understand the chilling requirements of fruit types selected for planting; contains regional maps of Alabama’s fall and winter temperatures as well as a table of chilling requirements for both small fruit and tree fruit crops.
