The coastal wetlands of Alabama are an extremely important and valuable natural resource. Scientists estimate that over 90 percent (by weight) of commercially and recreationally harvested fish and shellfish depend to some extent on wetlands. Wetlands also function as storm buffers, erosion controllers, pollution filters, habitat for important game species, and home to a variety of wildlife including endangered species.
