Poultry egg operations, particularly high-density large volume units, must be planned as total systems. Increasing concerns over water quality and nonpoint source pollution demand that more attention be given to every aspect of planning from site selection to manure management. Location, number of birds, amount of available land for application, soil type, geologic features, crops grown, available labor, and climate must be considered when choosing a waste management system for these operations.
